Open Call-out for The Stay at Home Residency series (May, June & July 2020)

The New Art Gallery Walsall is adapting its studio programme in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic to offer a series of stay at home residency opportunities for artists based in the West Midlands. Between May and July 2020, three artists will receive support to develop work from the safety of their home. See Submitting a Residency Proposal for full details. Our much loved children’s workshops will being going online! Join us from home to take part in our various workshops. This Easter we’ll have Saturday Playdates, Tuesday Tots, Wednesdays for All and Thursday Skills. Our talented Artist Educators are working hard to provide their workshops digitally so you can all join in from home. Keep an eye out on our website in the What’s On section and keep an eye on our Facebook page for alerts and updates about which workshops will be available. We’ll upload them all to the relevant sections on our website in Families so that they are there for whenever you feel like getting creative! The New Art Gallery Walsall temporary closure

To all our supporters, friends and visitors,

For over 20 years The New Art Gallery Walsall has been bringing people, art and artists together. However, in light of the developing situation with COVID-19, the welfare of our visitors and staff must come first. That is why Walsall Council have taken the decision to close the Gallery to the public, until further notice, from 2pm, Thursday 19^th March.

All scheduled events for the coming months have been cancelled; we will review which of these can be rescheduled for a later date. If you have paid for a ticket for one of our events you will be refunded.

Please continue to visit us online at our website and on social media for any updates and for access to the Gallery, its exhibitions and collections.

Thank you for your support – we don’t know yet when we will reopen, but we look forward to welcoming you back when we do.

Until then, stay safe and take care of yourselves and loved ones.

The New Art Gallery Walsall is hosting a special shopping event day on Sunday 1st December, 12noon-4pm, as part of Museum Shop Sunday, with bespoke craft stalls, entertainment, artist demonstrations and a drop in children’s workshop.

The Gallery will be open as normal on Saturday 28th, Sunday 29th & Tuesday 31st December. Normal hours resume from 2nd January.

This year’s Diwali ‘Rivers of India’ event which took place at The New Art Gallery Walsall on Saturday

10 November was a huge success with people from across the local community coming to celebrate the annual festival of light.

The event this year was in memory of the people who lost their lives in the severe floods of Kerala in July and August this year which affected the southern Indian state of Kerala, due to unusually high rainfall during the monsoon season.

Sadly over 483 people died in what was the worst flood in Kerala in nearly a century. At least a million people were evacuated, mainly from all 14 districts of the state which were placed on red alert.

According to the Kerala government, one-sixth of the total population of Kerala had been directly affected by the floods and related incidents.

The Diwali event raised £130.00 on the day and will go to The West Midlands Kerala Cultural Association, which will then be sent to the Chief Minister of Kerala in India.

Diwali organiser, Surjit Rai said “Visitors to the event found this year’s theme ‘Rivers of India’ most interesting and the entertainment was culturally uplifting. However it was also a time of reflection and an opportunity to pay our respects to the memory of the people of Kerala who went through the tragic events in July”.
