Manet, EdouardLa Petite Fille

La Petite Fille
Etching by Edouard Manet (1832-1883)

The subject of this etching is taken from the painting ‘Le vieux Musician’ (The Old Musician), where the girl is depicted full length in bare feet and facing in the opposite direction. The choice of model is typical, Manet often selected ordinary people from the street for his work and this girl came from a poor area of Paris called Little Poland. This is one of many prints that Manet made during the 1860s, although etchings were not considered to be a form of High Art, Manet and other artists often produced such prints to publicise their paintings in fashionable catalogues.
