Sleeping Girl
Watercolour by Lucian Freud (1922- 2011)

GR.99 – The Sleeping Girl, Lucien Freud, (1961), Watercolour
This painting is one of four watercolour studies that Freud made of his and Kitty’s youngest daughter Annabel. It was painted whilst on a trip to Greece using watercolours, which were often used by artists whilst travelling because of their portable nature. This is a preliminary drawing using watercolour washes. It has a much looser and fluid result than his usual tight linear painting style. Freud continued to draw throughout his career, however it was usually only in the context of creating a painting.
