This beginner’s course is a 10 week series exploring, looking and discussing art across four Black Country and Birmingham art galleries, in partnership with Wolverhampton Adult Education Service.  The series starts by looking at the story of art from the Renaissance to the 20th century at The Barber Institute of Fine Arts.  Here we will be asking ‘when looking at art, how do you begin to approach it, interrogate it and talk about it? Moving to The New Art Gallery Walsall we explore the Garman Ryan collection, specifically looking at early 20th century art, Jacob Epstein and the influence of non-European cultures.   At Wolverhampton Art Gallery the focus will be on Pop Art and how we define art.  We will also discuss the work of Black Artists involved in the BLK Art Group during the 1980s during which you’ll learn about tackling difficult and challenging subjects.  The later sessions will be at Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, exploring contemporary art today through their international exhibitions programme that will include work by Fiona Banner.

This beginner’s course is suitable for adult learners of all ages with no previous art knowledge.
