Lucienne Cole Party Piece!

This year, The New Art Gallery Walsall celebrates its 10th birthday. Artist Lucienne Cole has been commissioned by the gallery to produce a performance /live event as part of the celebrations.

PARTY PIECE will take place at The New Art Gallery Walsall on Saturday 10 April 2010 from 3pm – 5pm.

Described as “a lo-fi theatrical extravaganza inspired by the musical films of Busby Berkeley and Bauhaus Theatre”, the performance will feature local tap dancers, ballerinas, majorettes and musicians. The performance will be followed by a Tea Dance where everyone can join in and celebrate the gallery’s birthday together. Tea and cake will be served throughout the afternoon.

Lucienne has been working with all the participants as part of a residency at the gallery .The performance will feature dancers from Walsall Academy of Dance, Birmingham Metropolitan College and Black Country Crystal Majorettes. Live music will be provided by the Senior Citizens’ Swing Band who rehearse regularly at Forest Arts Centre.

Lucienne Cole is an artist based in London. Lucienne’s work is very much rooted in popular culture and the slippages between fantasy and reality in everyday life. Recent projects include ‘Is That All There Is?/I Only Want To be With You (Let’s Keep Dancing’, a performance shown at Testing Ground, 176 / Zabludowicz Collection, London, Jan 2010 and ‘The Whitworth Social’, (Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, 2008), which culminated in an event akin to a 21st century Tea-Dance crossing generations and styles of social dance. In 2006, she took to the streets of Tokyo engaging with different groups of people via an instructional video to perform 60s dance moves with Japanese Beatle’s tribute band The Silver Beats.

Lucienne would like to thank the Walsall Academy of Dance, Birmingham Metropolitan College, Helen Jones, Ioannis Ioannou, Hannah Anderson, Christa Collard, Lorraine Foggin, Charlotte Davies, Senior Citizens Swing Band, Terry and Janet Rushton, Deborah Robinson, Bruno Edwards, Neil Lebeter, Cheryl Jones, Mike Gallagher, Jo Digger, Jeremy Hunt, Kevin Storrar, Kaylee Jenkinson, David Jordan, Babis Alexiadis, Jane Anderson, Zoe Charakinou, The Vine Trust, Forest Arts Centre, Mike Parrott, Chris Wilkinson and Chris Keenan for his amazing photographs.
