We would like you to join us at The New Art Gallery Walsall to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Garman Ryan Collection, which opened on the 9 July 1974 in the Central Library, Lichfield Street, Walsall.
Friends, family & colleagues all welcome.
When Lady Kathleen Epstein gave the extraordinary gift of The Garman Ryan Collection to Walsall, it took over three years of negotiation and complex installation to enable it to open on the 9th July 1974 in the old Carnegie gallery and library, Lichfield Street, Walsall. The gift contained an amazing range of artworks, including work by Van Gogh, Monet, Freud, Epstein, Constable, Durer, Turner and others by unknown artists from many different cultures and periods around the world. Displayed for 40 years in Walsall, the collection has provided generations of people, locally nationally and internationally, with many wonderful opportunities to engage with art of the highest quality. Kathleen would have been proud of the educational opportunties which her collection has provided for people over the years.
This exhibiton tells some of the stories of the Garman Ryan Collection from its conception to the present day, with previously unseen archive material and artworks.
