Courtenay Welcome is a Birmingham-based artist who uses painting, installation, assemblage and performance to explore race politics, identity and social justice. She was awarded a residency following West Midlands Open in 2022, an exhibition of recent artworks by artists from, or connected to, the region. Courtenay will spend six weeks in the Artists’ Studio focused on the production of paintings and installations and receiving tailored development support.


Courtenay Welcome attended Walsall College before graduating from The University of the West of England in 2019. She is the current Associate Artist at YARD Art House, a studio holder at Stryx and a participant of the 2022 cohort of Black Hole Club, Birmingham. Recent group exhibitions include (Dis)Embodied Burdens, Cooke Latham Gallery, London and Cut, Copy, Remix II, Vivid Projects, Birmingham, both 2022. She is represented by Rising Arts Agency, a collaborative community of artists and creatives mobilising for social change.
