Twenty Twenty Collection
The New Art Gallery Walsall is proud to present The Twenty Twenty Collection exhibition.
Following an open call-out, which received submissions from 220 artists across the region, in Spring 2021 the Gallery acquired 32 new works by 30 West Midlands’ based artists, with their individual responses to the significant events that shaped 2020.
The works, spanning a variety of media from collage and photography to drawing and painting, respond to world events over a tumultuous year; from the Covid19 pandemic and National Lockdowns, to Black Lives Matter and Brexit, to Class Inequalities and Climate Change.
The Twenty Twenty Collection Artists all had the opportunity to be profiled on our social media channels during 2021, ahead of this dedicated 8 month long presentation of the new collection in our Community Gallery which will be accompanied by an extensive artist-led events programme.
It has been incredibly important for The New Art Gallery Walsall to continue to support regional artists after a particularly difficult period for the arts, which has seen venues closed, projects postponed or cancelled, and financial insecurity experienced by many.
We hope 2022 will allow more opportunities for the public to engage with our Collections as we present opportunities for direct dialogue with the artists in the exhibition. This presentation will show how artists play a vital role in helping us shape, understand and respond to current and future events.
A new interactive wall-drawing by collection artist Yasmin Agilah-Hood in our Foyer will welcome visitors back to the Gallery next year to accompany the exhibition, along with interactive activities which will allow visitors the opportunity to reflect on their own experiences of this significant time period.
